Gans,
You've said you want help with speaking. I think the best help will come by
conversing with a native, and having them correct you. If you don't live
near any native Hindi speakers, you should get a microphone for your
computer, and try meeting willing teachers on yahoo messenger, or on
www.paltalk.com . I know of one person who is successfully getting help that
way.
For learning the Devanagari script, I would recommend the Hindi lessons at
www.ukindia.com/
Go to the 'Language' section. There are twenty lessons.
The last time I looked, they missed out the aspirated letters, so you'll
have to work them out separately.
If you want to work from a language book, buy "Colloquial Hindi". I have
seen "Teach Yourself Hindi", but doesn't think it is as good for
conversation as "Colloquial Hindi". Both these packages come with tapes,
which are very helpful.
You're going to have to be prepared to learn lots of phrases "PARROT
FASHION". All of us learnt our own language that way (babies don't
understand much grammar).
I think you'll find http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~malaiya/hindilinks.html a
good site for locating other Hindi help.
cheers,
Stuart
